ClassicPress v1.6.0 Is Out – Goodbye WordPress 4.9

ClassicPress 1.6.0

While we say hello to the new version 1.6.0, we’re saying goodbye to the version 1 branch and, with it, to WordPress 4.9.

Version 1.6.0 is out, and it’s our last minor release to wrap things up with the version 1 branch to prepare for version 2.0.

There are a few important things you need to be aware of:

  • Version 1.6 is the last version to support PHP 5.6 – 7.3. Starting with version 2.0, the minimum required version will be PHP 7.4. Following SemVer, we have included a PHP version deprecation notice in a dashboard widget.
  • Version 1.6 is the last version to be based on WordPress 4.9. Starting with version 2.0, ClassicPress will be based on WordPress 6.2.
  • Version 1.6 will receive security updates until November 26, 2023. This is the date when PHP 8.0 will stop receiving security updates. Remember, PHP 7.4 is already unsupported.

Version 1.6.0 includes a few minor bug fixes and backports. You can see all the changes in the release notes.

Version 2.0

We are actively working on version 2.0 based on WordPress 6.2. You can test version 2.0 nightly and report any issues to help us catch bugs and issues.

If you would like to help with version 2.0, one big task we have left is translations. If you can help translate and proofread translations, don’t hesitate to comment on this thread in the forum.

We welcome and appreciate all the help we can get.
